For the love of the game

This past Saturday marked the return of the not-so-famous Great Upstate Snow Game. The wonderful thing about our sport is that you can throw all kinds of nasty weather at us and we’ll still find a reason to play – even in 25 degrees (-50 with the wind-chill) weather with 6 inches of snow on the ground! This year’s snow game saw the return of a few of our appropriately dressed veterans as well as a slew of new comers.  We broke the bank this year by finally throwing in some coin for proper jerseys (shirts). It added an element of professionalism that was missing last year but we didn’t class-it-up too much fearing it would take away from the backyard feel we were hoping to create.

After a session around the impromptu trash can fire we broke up into teams and began to warm up. Team Ice Breakers (wearing their iconic bright orange) featured Captain Ryan Powell with our Pathfinders Mike Bocklet, John Maloney, John Lade and Kevin Leveille while Team Guns ’N Frozes (in black) hit the field with captain Trent Pfau with Pathfinders Dan Hardy, Brandon Mullins and Tim Barber. The format was a 3v3 best of 3 series with games played to 7.

Game 1 was the start as well as the end of the bright spot for team Guns ‘N Frozes as they cruised to a 7-2 win and proceeded to get outgunned (pun intended) the remainder of the series. In games 2 and 3, the Icebreakers took it to an undermanned Guns ‘N Frozes team that were without the services of their 5th player.

The day featured an awesome display of creative stickwork, bruising defense and competitive toughness that embodies the lacrosse culture in the Great Upstate. Enjoy the game highlights and photos from the games. We can’t wait to hit the field next year for the 2018 Great Upstate Snow Game!
