Welcome to the Powell Lacrosse Game of the Week our newest series on the Field Exploration Journal. Each week we will feature the most interesting matchup of the weekend and break down what to look for from each team heading into the game.
The inaugural Game of the Week features the Syracuse Orange versus the Albany Great Danes.
Syracuse has a long history of NCAA Championships, legendary coaches, and All-American players. The swagger of Cuse’s style of play, their iconic uniforms, and the mystic behind playing in the historic Carrier Dome have made them one of the premiere teams in college lacrosse for the past several decades.
Albany has recently stepped out from the shadow of teams like Syracuse to become a fan favorite and one of the best teams in the country every year. They reached the Final Four just last season, but have still never tasted Memorial Day glory like their opponent has so many times before.
The Orange have had stars like the Gait and Powell brothers as well as Marechek, Lockwood, Nims, and countless others. The Danes have had their own pairs of brothers in the Resetarits and Thompson brothers and their own standouts such as Caufield, Maloney, and Fields. These teams reflect one another more than they are different and have both broke the conventions of how the game of lacrosse is played at different times in their histories.
In 2019, these two great programs meet once again in a rivalry that historically favors Syracuse, but the past few seasons has seen overtime thrillers and Albany claiming victory in 2018’s meeting.
Syracuse comes into this game after losing to the Colgate Raiders 12-9 last weekend in an uncharacteristic start to the season for the Orange. This will be Albany’s first game of the season and a good test to start their next run at a championship.
Cuse will be without a number 22 again this season, but has a cast of players looking to make their mark in Orange history. Brendan Curry, Nate Solomon, Tyson Bomberry, Jakob Phaup and Drake Porter played well against Colgate and will be looking to rebound against the Danes. Can they get the Syracuse swagger back?
Albany must learn to play without Connor Fields and TD Ierlan with a group that will continue the fast paced and creative play that the team has become known for. Righty Tehoka Nanticoke and Lefty Jakob Patterson will act as a one two punch for the Dane offense and players all over the roster are ready to contribute. They will have a new goalie in Nate Siekierski, but have an experienced defense in front of him in Matt Perla and Erik Dluhy. Will the Danes start out 2019 with a bang?
Powell Lacrosse’s very own Ryan Powell will be a commentator on the broadcast of this game so tune in at 4 pm on Saturday to see hear from RP and watch the next chapter of this rivalry in what should be a high scoring and exciting game of lacrosse.
The game can be viewed on Watch ESPN.
