Syracuse (1-1) hosts Army (3-0)
This week’s edition of the Powell Lacrosse Game of the Week is the matchup between The Syracuse Orange and the Army Black Knight on Sunday Feb. 24 at 4pm at the Carrier Dome.
This rivalry always seems to have a dramatic ending with Army’s victory over the Orange in the first round of the playoffs in 2010 likely still fresh in many people’s minds. In the past three seasons this game has been decided by 1 goal. Syracuse won in 2016, Army won with less than a second left in 2017, and Syracuse won in triple overtime in 2018. This year’s game is shaping up to be another nail biter.
When Syracuse and Army meet, it is a clash of differing styles of play, organization, and very different college athletes.
Syracuse is made up of extremely talented and hardworking lacrosse players who are representing the storied history of fast paced and creative play their program is known for. Off the field, they are your normal student-athletes going to class and preparing themselves for their future jobs.
Army is made up of young men who have the opportunity to play lacrosse in college while also training to one day serve their country. When they step on to the lacrosse field they are just like any other college lacrosse player in the country in terms of equipment and lacrosse skill, but when they run out onto the field with the American flag they are representing something bigger than themselves. This can be seen through their selfless play and determination to win at all costs.
Army is looking like a serious playoff contender early in the season as they come into Saturday’s contest 3-0 after winning its first three games of the season against UMass in overtime, Rutgers by 1 goal, and Marist in a dominate win. So far they have been led offensively by talented Freshman attackman Brendan Nichtern who has 12 points in 3 games as well as midfielder Matt Manown and attackman Matt Silva with 8 points each. They also have a veteran goalie in Senior AJ Barretto who has experience playing in the Carrier Dome and shutting down Syracuse shooters.
The Orange have definitely gotten some confidence and swagger back after their dominate win over Albany last weekend, but this Army game could be the real indicator of how good this Cuse team can be. After struggling offensively against Colgate, the offense came alive as Bradley Voigt finished with 6 goals and 1 assist and Brendan Curry added 2 goals and 3 assists. 5 other Orange players also had a goal. Drake Porter continues to impress in net and the defense was aggressive and physical against Albany limiting them to just 5 goals.
This game should be an exciting one as the Dome will be rocking on Sunday as Syracuse and Army fans alike will pack the stands for this rivalry game. Ryan Powell will be on the broadcast once again so if you can’t make it to the game tune in online on Watch ESPN at 4pm to hear from RP and watch what should be another close game between these two teams.
