What We’re Watching: April 8 – April 14

It is now or never for many teams in the country as the races for conference playoff spots are getting down to the wire with only a few more weekends of the regular season left. Many teams could still sneak in with some upset wins and the teams at the top of their conferences will have to grind it out to secure the top seeds for the postseason. There are lots of exciting matchups this weekend so here is what games the Powell Lacrosse office will be watching.

Saturday 4/13

Detroit Mercy vs Canisius
Watch on ESPN+ at 12 PM

In a rematch of the 2018 MAAC Championship game, Detroit will be looking for revenge against the team who ended their season last year in overtime. Canisius has made the conference race even closer after knocking off Quinnipiac last weekend, but the Titans hold the top spot with four wins in conference. This game will be heated as two of the best teams in the MAAC battle it out in the Motor City. Here is what happened the last time these teams met:

#4 Virginia vs #7 Duke
Watch on ESPNU at 12 PM

Virginia is leading the ACC with 3 wins in conference and Duke desperately needs a conference win to get a spot in the ACC tournament. These teams are loaded with offensive firepower and should put on a show in Durham.

Delaware vs Hofstra
Watch on LaxSportsNetwork at 2 PM

With Hofstra’s overtime win against UMass last weekend they are back in the hunt for the CAA playoffs, but face a Delaware team that has been on a tear all season and sits atop the CAA at 2-0. This will be a great game as these rivals duke it out in Blue Hen territory. Hofstra will be buzzing after the UMass win.

#9 Syracuse vs #18 North Carolina
Watch on Watch ESPN at 3 PM

Syracuse is coming off a big win against Upstate rivals Cornell and will be feeling good as they face a UNC team that still has something to prove after losing a few close games earlier this season. The Tar Heels could get another signature win by knocking off the Orange, but Syracuse looked to be clicking on all cylinders against Cornell.

#20 Army vs Navy
Watch on CBS Sports Network at 3:30 PM

This will be the 100th meeting between the two service academies that for Army and Navy is always their biggest game of the season. It doesn’t matter what either teams record is. Winning this game determines whether or not they had a successful year. This is one of the best rivalries in all of sports as these young men will meet as opponents on the lacrosse field on Saturday, but will be brothers in arms once they graduate. Who will be singing their alma mater after the game in 2019?

Sunday 4/14

#10 Notre Dame vs #8 Cornell
Watch on Watch ESPN at 12 PM

Both these teams have had up and down seasons and would love to bolster their resumes with another Top 10 win to give them a better chance at an at large playoff bid. The Irish have shown how dangerous they like in their win against Syracuse. Cornell might have the best attack line in the country in Jeff Teat, John Piatelli, and Clarke Petterson, but will need a full team effort to take down Notre Dame. Check out a behind the scenes look at Cornell as they are followed in “The Season” documentary.

#16 Johns Hopkins vs #12 Ohio State
Watch on ESPNU at 12 PM

Hopkins and OSU have had polar opposite seasons. The Buckeyes started out winning 7 games straight and then losing their first 2 conference games. The Blue Jays had a few tough losses to start the season, but are now 2-0 in the Big Ten thanks to the play of star freshman Joey Epstein and company. OSU needs a win to keep their Big Ten playoff dreams alive.

#14 Villanova vs Georgetown
Watch on CBS Sports Network at 1 PM

This is a huge Big East matchup as the conference is now wide open after Villanova beat the usual Big East favorite Denver. Villanova has a knack for taking down ranked teams, but will now face a Georgetown squad that is looking to make the Big East even more interesting by giving the Wildcats their first conference loss.

Division 2 Game of the Week

#1 Adelphi vs #5 Le Moyne
Watch on NE10 Now on Saturday 4/13 at 3 PM

Adelphi is still undefeated and dominating D2 lacrosse thanks to senior attackman Ian Kirby, senior goalie Brendan Mcdougal, and their stout defense, but if anyone is going to beat them in the regular season it could be the always dangerous Le Moyne. Adelphi has been scoring highlight reel goals all season.

Division 3 Game of the Week

#9 Ursinus vs #16 Franklin and Marshall
Watch on FandM Live on Saturday 4/13 at 3 PM

Ursinus start 2019 out with a bang and shocked many as they rattled off six straight wins before falling to Gettysburg. Franklin and Marshall actually leads the Centennial conference with a 3-0 in conference record as they actually beat Gettysburg so their chances against Ursinus are looking good. However, beating Ursinus will be a tall task as they are having one of the best seasons in their history.
