What We’re Watching: March 11 – March 17

Lacrosse’s March Madness continues as we have a strong docket of games this week and some big Top 20 matchups. We have a meeting of new vs old in Utah vs Duke, old rivalries like Yale vs Cornell, and potential upsets in Mount St. Mary’s vs Johns Hopkins or Maryland vs Villanova. There are a bunch of games all at 1 PM on Saturday so either pick your favorite or you can flip between several great games going on at once.

Here are some of the most interesting matchups in this week of college lacrosse.

Tuesday 3/12

Bucknell vs North Carolina

On Watch ESPNat 4 PM

The Tar Heels are looking to continue their winnings ways against a Bucknell team that could sneak up on them as they have played close games against some tough opponents this season like Maryland, Richmond, and Ohio State.

#2 Duke vs Utah

On Watch ESPNat 7 PM

Don’t call Utah a 1st year team. The Utes have already won 4 games in their first season of Division 1 lacrosse and now face their biggest challenge yet in #2 ranked Duke.

Mount St. Mary’s vs #17 Johns Hopkins

On Watch ESPNat 7 PM

Hopkins is reeling after its third loss of the season and Mount St. Mary’s could capitalize if they put together a good game. Mount has played a close game with Towson and beat Richmond earlier this season.

#15 Rutgers vs #16 Lehigh

On Big Ten Network at 7 PM

These are two teams that have battled their way into the Top 20 with some impressive wins. The winner of this game will move up in the rankings and the other will likely get pushed out. Rutgers Goalie Max Edelmann and company have been clutch in close games so far this season.

Saturday 3/16

Georgetown vs Drexel

On Hoya Vision $at 12 PM

This has the potential to be a great game as both these teams have been clawing their way to victories all season and are two underrated squads looking to string some big wins together to propel themselves into the Top 20. Watch out for Drexel’s shifty midfielder from Collin Mailman who has one of the best last names in college lacrosse

Canisius vs #19 Colgate

On  ESPN3at 1 PM

As a Canisius lacrosse alum I will be in attendance at this game to watch the Griffs take on a very good Colgate team that knocked off Syracuse earlier this season. It looks like it will be another windy and cold day in Buffalo, but hopefully there will be no snow like there was at the Griffs’ last home game against Air Force.

#2 Duke vs #5 Towson

On Watch ESPNat 1 PM

This will be a huge game for both teams as they each look to get a resume building win as both will soon move into conference play. Towson lost their #1 ranking after losing to Cornell and will want to move back up the rankings. Expect this game to be a barn burner that goes down to the wire with these two high powered athletic teams.

#4 Yale vs #3 Cornell

On ESPN News or ESPN+ at 1PM

Ivy League foes will face off in a big test of whos who as these are two teams who could make it to Final Four weekend with their star power. Yale will have to figure out how to limit Jeff Teat and Cornell will have to find a way to win faceoffs against the surgical TD Ierlan. These two met in a wild Ivy League Championship last season.

#13 Syracuse vs #15 Rutgers

On Watch ESPNat 1 PM

Syracuse is back on track after beating Hopkins and will have to get past a talented and determined Rutgers squad to stay in the win column. Powell Lacrosse’s own Ryan Powell will be on the broadcast.

#9 Ohio State vs #11 Denver

On Big Ten Network 2 Go $at 1 PM

These teams know each other well and for a long time they were two of the most western Division 1 lacrosse teams. Now they are two of the best in the country and this game should be an old fashioned shootout.

#12 Virginia vs #7 Notre Dame

On Watch ESPNat 1 PM

This is a match up that has been decided by one or two goals for last 4 seasons and could potentially need overtime in 2019 with both teams looking strong so far this season. Expect a chippy game as these teams have become bitter ACC rivals. Notre Dame might have the luck of the Irish on their side with this game being the day before St. Patrick’s Day.

#6 Maryland vs Villanova

On Big Ten Network 2 Go $at 3 PM

This is a huge potential upset as Villanova already knocked off a top ranked team in Yale earlier this season.
